Event Recap: WSC Idea Lab Workshop

In April, the Wayne community gathered at the CAT Building Atrium for the inaugural WSC Idea Lab Workshop, an event designed to ignite entrepreneurial spirit and foster innovative thinking. With 11 enthusiastic attendees, the workshop provided a unique opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to explore the journey of starting a business.

Event Highlights

Setting the Stage

The evening kicked off with snacks and refreshments, followed by an introduction to the workshop's agenda and house rules. Ben Benton, Center Director at SBDC - Wayne, and Emma Bennett, Growth Manager at Invest Nebraska, facilitated the event, bringing their expertise and passion for entrepreneurship to the table.

To kick things off, we began the workshop by delving into a critical topic that often determines the fate of new ventures: the #1 reason startups fail—creating products or services that do not meet the needs or desires of their target audience.

This discussion was pivotal in setting the stage for the rest of the workshop, as it underscored the importance of understanding and addressing genuine market needs. By highlighting this common pitfall, we aimed to shift the participants' focus towards identifying problems that are truly worth solving. This approach not only laid the groundwork for generating impactful solutions but also encouraged attendees to think deeply about the value and relevance of their ideas in the real world. Through this initial conversation, we emphasized the necessity of aligning entrepreneurial efforts with actual consumer demands, thereby increasing the likelihood of success and innovation.

Problem Statements and "How Might We" Questions

Attendees engaged in a dynamic and interactive process, working collaboratively in small groups to carefully frame problem statements that accurately captured the challenges they aimed to address. They then transformed these problem statements into "How Might We" questions, a technique designed to open up possibilities and encourage creative thinking.

This approach ensured that the ideation session remained not only solution-oriented but also infused with a sense of optimism and collaboration. By focusing on these "How Might We" questions, participants were able to maintain a positive and forward-thinking mindset, fostering an environment where innovative ideas could flourish and diverse perspectives were valued and integrated into the problem-solving process.

Solution Generation and Paper Prototyping

The workshop continued with an engaging series of solution generation activities, where participants were encouraged to brainstorm a wide array of ideas, drawing from their diverse backgrounds and experiences. This collaborative environment fostered creativity and innovation, as attendees worked together to refine their concepts. They then moved on to the development of paper prototypes, a crucial step that involved sketching and constructing tangible representations of their ideas. This hands-on approach not only allowed attendees to visualize their concepts in a more concrete form but also provided them with the opportunity to identify potential improvements and adjustments. By preparing these prototypes, participants were better equipped to articulate and pitch their solutions effectively, gaining valuable insights and feedback from their peers and facilitators.

Pitches and Closing Remarks

The event reached its peak with an exciting series of pitches, where participants confidently presented their meticulously crafted prototypes to an eager audience. Each presentation was an opportunity for the attendees to showcase the innovative solutions they had developed, drawing on the skills and insights gained throughout the workshop. As they articulated their ideas, they received constructive feedback from both their peers and the facilitators, who offered valuable perspectives and suggestions for refinement. This feedback session was not only a chance to improve their concepts but also a moment to celebrate the creativity and hard work that had been invested. Following the pitches, the facilitators encouraged attendees to take the insights and experiences gained from the workshop and apply them as they move forward, urging them to continue exploring and developing their ideas with confidence and determination. The facilitators' words served as a motivational send-off, reinforcing the belief that each participant had the potential to make a significant impact in the entrepreneurial world.

Intersect's Mission

This workshop is the 4th ideation event put on by Intersect, which shows how dedicated we are to sparking innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. These events are all about introducing people to design thinking, a highly effective approach to tackling problems creatively and focusing on what users truly need. By diving into this process, participants gain hands-on experience in building solid business ideas from scratch. It's a great way to dip your toes into the entrepreneurial world, offering a friendly and open space for folks to explore their potential. Intersect does a great job of reaching out to a mix of students and community members, even those who might not see themselves as part of the local startup scene. By doing this, we not only expand our reach but also bring fresh ideas and hidden talent into the local entrepreneurial mix.
